The weather as of late in Colorado Springs was certainly not conducive to camping. Two nights of snow in a row certainly made camping feel like a less imminent proposition. Rather than head south (and into at least the same or higher elevations) towards Santa Fe, we decided to head due east.
Pam decided she wanted to do a lot of driving with the trailer, so David and Pam took turns driving. Pam was the one who drove across the state line into Kansas! First we headed across Colorado (almost three hours) and then across Kansas. The day was fairly dreary, snow to start the day for a good portion of Colorado, turning to rain as we headed across Kansas, and then turning to just grey. Here was our 'pal' we met along the way:
Actually, this horse was not too happy to be tied up on such a cold and windy day, outside at a rest stop, so David did not get too close when taking the picture. It stayed fairly cold so we decided to stay at a hotel that evening.
We chose another Holiday Inn Express in Salina, Kansas. We were not the only ones. There was a large choir (four bus loads) that were also staying there. We were able to get in (fortunately), although we were not able to get adjoining rooms (they were next to each other, just not adjoining). All four kids stayed in one room (and shared the queen beds) and Pam and David stayed next door (in one of their two queen beds). We had dinner across the street at a Wendy's (with Baskin 31 Flavours for an ice cream dessert).
That evening David did a lot of web site work (scanning pictures, etc.) to get the web site up-to-date. We also watched the weather channel like a hawk. Perhaps we would head down to the Lake of the Ozards area or perhaps even farther down towards Kentucky.
