Chapter 38: Petersburg KOA, Michigan

Again, another day of uneventful driving (which at this point is a good thing). We had decided to head up Interstate 69 and then dip across toll road 90 into Ohio (one more state to add to our collection). Just as we got to the outskirts of Toledo we headed north to cross the border into Michigan. Toledo is supposedly a fairly dirty city, however, we did not get a chance to make a judgement, since we stayed a bit to the west of the actual city. When we hit the Michigan border the city ways were immediately left behind us and we found ourselves in a very quiet, country setting. We were only 10 miles (or so) across the border before we pulled off near Petersburg, Michigan and stopped at our night location, the Petersburg KOA.

It was around 6:30 PM local time and we checked in, set up our site, and grabbed a bag of cookies (as dessert for our dinner). Here are pictures of the site just before it started to get dark. This place was really quite empty (except for a few RVers in the front part of the campsite). We actually chose to stay in a site behind the main buildings and there was only one other trailer (in the extreme distance), as you can see from this picture:

Here is another picture from near our campsite. This is the little lake that they had. It all still looks pretty bleak and cold (it was):

We were in finishing up mode for food that was still left in the trailer, so we had rice and beans for dinner. The boys were able to play some video games, since they had an arcade there. Pam even got a chance to dry a few things before they locked up the laundry room (adjacent to the video games).

Things were definitely getting pretty cold by this time .. it looked like we were heading for a night of around 40 degrees. Indianapolis had been a beautiful 73 during the day and probably around 50 at night. Here they probably only had about 55 during the day. Mind you, the rainy system that we had been running east from had finally caught up to us.

David tried to check up on local radio stations that evening to see how the Senators were doing, in what turned out to be there last playoff game (yuck, four games straight after having such a spectacular season). Mind you, as we discovered a few days later, the New Jersey Devils didn't fair much better (also dropping out in the first round of the playoffs).

We had a nice, though somewhat cooler evening, sleep. When we got up in the morning and were eating and getting ready to go we had really our first semi-major altercation between Daniel and James (had to sneek it in, I guess before we totally packed up). James hit Daniel and so Daniel solidly kicked James back. Unfortunately, James had a cup full of orange juice he had just poured himself. There wasn't much left in the cup after his arm was kicked quite hard. We spent the next almost an hour cleaning up after the spill (washing cushion covers, etc.). Fortunately, we had a dryer that was readily accessible.

Finally, we did get going, after our final pack-up of the tent trailer of our "Trip of '99".
